Aitzaz still not sure Swiss letter will be sent

LAHORE - Senior lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan, who represented former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in the NRO order implementation case, says he is still not sure if the government will write a letter to the Swiss authorities.

“There’s still many a slip between the cup and the lip,” he said in a TV programme on Saturday. To have the letter written, he said the apex court would have to be flexible and more accommodative and agree to a text which doesn’t expose President Zardari to foreign courts. Also, he said there must be an assurance in the letter that the court order would be binding on the investigating agencies.
Answering a question, Ahsan said the govt and the SC have different views on this issue. According to him, the court is taking it as a corruption issue while the government takes it as an issue of national sovereignty.
In such a situation, he said one party would have to change its position. But, according to him, the Supreme Court is taking a stricter position. He recalled that when he was arguing former Gilani’s case, he had given an assurance to the court that the government would write the letter the day Mr Zardari was not the president.  At present, he said he was seeing no meeting point between the government and the apex court. He said whatever letter was to be agreed upon would be deemed to have been approved and sent by the court.
