WASHINGTON - A son-in-law of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda spokesman was arrested in Jordan and then brought to New York, after a secret operation conducted by Jordanian authorities and the FBI, according to media reports quoting American officials.

They said the man, Suleiman Abu Ghaith, initially had been picked up in Turkey.
The Turkish government deported him to Jordan, where local authorities and the FBI took custody of him. He had been brought to the United States in the last few days, the reports said.
Abu Ghaith is now being held in a detention facility in the New York City area and is expected to be charged and eventually brought to trial in federal court.
The Justice Department declined to comment and the FBI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Ghaith was captured last week in a joint operation of Turkey’s National Intelligence Organisation and the CIA, Turkey’s Zaman reported Thursday.
