ISLAMABAD - Pakistan People’s Party leadership has decided to merge Federal Council of the party into the Central Executive Committee, ostensibly to make the party more coherent and vibrant to meet the challenges party would likely face in the election campaign for the upcoming general elections.Sources in the party informed that the role of Federal Council of the party was under criticism in the party meetings for past sometime and party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari was also not satisfied with the working of the Federal Council while he also wanted to revamp and reshape the Central Executive Committee of the party to meet the challenges ahead, particularly in the upcoming general elections in which party is planning to land with its coalition partners. It is not known yet what would be the size of the CEC after the merger of Federal Council in it. At present the Federal Council has 70 members while CEC comprises 40 members. Some senior party leaders informed TheNation that the merger would lead to shunting out of certain members both from Federal Council and CEC, obviously those not in the good books of President Zardari and some fresh inductees of Co-Chairman’s choice would be inducted in the party to give the body new look.Sources in the party informed that besides revamping of the CEC some nine committees in the party at federal level would be constituted which would work in unison with the CEC. A few committees including finance, manifesto and foreign affairs committees were already operating at federal level in the party, but their performance was not up to the mark in the eyes of the party’s central leadership. The already five-member think tank in the party would be further activated and some new faces would likely be inducted in it so that it would give quality input to the party on policy making as well as everyday emerging political and social issues in the country. Syed Khurshid Shah, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Nazar Mohammad Gondal, Syed Naveed Qamar and Qamar Zaman Kaira are currently the members of this body while some more party veterans would likely join this team to guide the party on issues of vital importance.A political cell at Awan-I-Sadr would also be revamped and Ms Rukhsana Bangish, Ms Mahreen Anwar Raja, Ms Fouzia Wahab, Ms Fouzia Habib and a few other senior party leaders would be members of this cell which would address the problems facing the party workers and activists on daily basis at Awan-I-Sadr, while these leaders would also go to the residences of those party activists and leaders who annoyed with the party leadership for ignoring them over the past four years in power and to realign them with the party so that they could once again play their constructive role for the party in upcoming general elections.Sources in the party informed The Nation that President Asif Ali Zardari has directed the party high command to expeditiously execute the decisions taken in this connection so that the whole exercise would be complete by end of July this year.
