MULTAN - At least two patients expired while many others got stranded when doctors and paramedical staff abandoned work at the emergency ward of Nishtar Hospital following a clash with the attendants of a patient, who died of alleged negligence of the doctors. The windowpanes of surgical and medical floors of emergency ward got smashed during the brawl. The doctors and paramedics skipped from the spot and did not return to work till filing of this report. The grievances of the poor patients multiplied as no doctor was available at Nishtar Emergency to attend them while private hospitals also refused to take emergency cases. Dozens of patients were seen lying helpless in and outside the emergency ward.  The hospital administration including Principal and Medical Superintendent turned up one and a half hour later of the incident. They could not get the emergency service restored and the doctors remained off the duty. Hospital sources said that a patient namely Abdul Samad, a resident of Lakkar Mandi area, was brought to the emergency ward with head injury and his attendants were asked to take him to Radiology Department for CT Scan.  However, the machine was out of order and the attendants rushed him to a private scanning centre but he expired. The heirs alleged that the doctors were exchanging gossips and they refused to examine the patient.  Meanwhile, the Young Doctors Association (YDA) and Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Multan chapter have condemned the incident, demanding immediate action against those involved in firing on doctors. The YDA also gave strike call.
