Privilege committees formation in doldrums

January 10, 2011

KARA CHI The differences between the ruling PPP and opposition benches over naming chairperson has delayed the formation of Privilege Committee of sitting Sindh Assembly since 2008, sources told TheNation. Though the ruling PPP and opposition benches had developed a consensus under which the slot of chairperson of Privilege Committee would go to the opposition, the PML-F has recommended its lady member, Syeda Marvi Faseeh Rashdi as head of committee. But the ruling PPP wants Syed Faseeh Ahmed Shah of PPP, husband of Syeda Marvi Rashdi, to lead Privilege Committee of the House, sources disclosed. Though the names of members of Privilege Committee have been finalised, the selection or election of its chairperson has been in doldrums for the last two years due to differences among the ruling PPP and opposition benches. In this regard, Opposition Leader and PML-F Parliamentary Leader in Sindh, Jam Madad Ali Khan, told The Nation that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah had made commitment to allot the slot of Privilege Committee of House to the PML-F along with two additional members. On the commitment of PPP, we had recommended Syeda Marvi Rashdis name as head of committee, but later ruling PPP including the CM raised objection over her name as chairperson because they feel she was too vocal in raising public issues in House, the Opposition Leader said. He added that now PPP had backed out of its commitment, as it wanted its nominee, Syed Faseeh Ahmed Shah, to lead the Privilege Committee. The Opposition Leader pointed out that PPP had also retracted from its promise to give chairmanship of Public Accounts Committee of the Assembly earlier, but now ruling party wanted to keep slot of the chairperson of Privilege Committee with them, which will not be acceptable to PML-F, he warned. Jam Madad clarified that Syeda Marvi Rashdi had not withdrawn in favour her husband Syed Faseeh Ahmed Shah of PPP to lead the Privilege Committee, and now the PPP was deliberately delaying the formation of an important committee of the house. If PPP did not fulfil its commitment and try to impose its chairperson of Privilege Committee then we will resign from the chairmen and memberships of all the Standing Committees of Assembly, he threatened. However, Law Minister of Sindh, Muhammad Ayaz Soomro, while talking to TheNation rejected the statement of the Opposition Leader, saying that it was not mandatory to give slot of chairperson of Privilege Committee to the opposition.
