Sources in the party informed that the party chief Nawaz Sharif has tasked the legal team of the party to look into the pros and cons of becoming party to the case in defence of the Election Commission of Pakistan and its composition.
The sources further informed that in a party meeting held a few days ago in Lahore the party leadership had also discussed Dr. Tahirul Qadri’s plan to move the apex court against the composition of the Election Commission of Pakistan. As the party leaders were divided on the issue - some of them were in support of becoming party while a sizeable number of party leadership wanted to remain neutral in the matter. So after thorough discussion on the subject it was decided that the legal experts of the party should look into the matter and then in the light of their advice the party would draw its future course. On the other hand, the PPP-led coalition government was all prepared to defend the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and the four provincial members of the commission with full force and in this connection the PPP leadership had taken all the coalition partners on board.
The sources in the PPP further informed that in next couple of days the party leadership would also be meeting the N-League to have their backing on the issue as PPP considers the move by Dr. Tahirul Qadri a ploy to delay the upcoming elections in the country and to pave the way for installation of some interim set-up for longer period.
The sources further said that despite acrimony on host of issues and yawning mistrust between the PPP and PML-N the leadership of two parties was at least agreed on one point agenda of holding the upcoming elections in time. And this agreement between these two parties would frustrate all attempts aimed at derailing the political system, a source in PML-N said.
