ISLAMABAD - Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Tuesday called on President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr.According to informed sources, a host of issues, including security situation, were discussed during the meeting.Sources said the president and the COAS agreed that no external pressure would be accepted regarding North Waziristan operation and Pakistan would decide on its own whether to start the military action or not.They also reviewed the on-going floods situation in the country caused by the recent heavy rains and relief and rescue measures being taken to overcome the challenge.Kayani briefed the president on steps being taken by Pakistan Army on request of the administrations of the flood-affected districts in south and assured him of his support of the armed forces in case of any emergency in the country due to recent floods.Agencies add: President Zardari and General Kayani also deliberated on professional matters of army and imposition of ban on the Haqqani network by the United States. Sources said both the leaders discussed in detail the aftermath of declaring Haqqani network a terrorist organisation by the US while they also reviewed the agenda of Pakistan upon the upcoming visits of the US high ups to Pakistan.During the meeting, President Zardari maintained that Pakistan had given great sacrifices in the on-going war against terrorism; therefore, the international community should appreciate the role of Pakistan by keeping in view the sacrifices of the Pakistani nation. The president, while talking about the North Waziristan operation, said both the military and government would collectively decide the operation, adding that the government’s top most priority is the defence and security of the country.The meeting continued for more than an hour, said sources.
