Water scarcity grips QAU

ISLAMABAD –Quaid-e-Azam University is facing acute water shortage while Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the varsity administration has turned deaf ears towards miseries of the students.

Supporting staffs of the CDA’s Directorate of Water Supply is allegedly making money by allowing an illegal water connection from the 48 inches diameter supply line.  It is pertinent to note that according to rules of the CDA no one was allowed to establish a connection from the said line because it provided water to important buildings, including Prime Minister House, President House and Parliament.
The main reason behind this theft is that the CDA never stopped water supply through this line and currently all other supply lines (i.e. 18 inches diameter, 36 inches diameter) do not have water since long.
The slum settlers had no other solution except bribing the officials of the CDA for water in the hot summer. If some one counted those houses that got water connections illegally, their number would be in thousands, this agency has learnt.
When this scribe asked a resident of the slum area namely Chaudhry Abdul Majeed about the issue, he replied aggressively that they had no other solution besides bribing for illegal water connections. He agreed that they were living on CDA’s land and said that Wapda provided them electricity, which endorses their right to get other basic necessities of living especially water.
This scribe has learnt that a lower official of the CDA receives Rs 10,000 for a single two inches connection from the 48 inches diameter supply line. The connection developers further distribute water connections for Rs 5,000 per slum house.
