Fawad makes dream debut

Fawa d Alam is a diminutive but gutsy cricketer. Fawad got to play this Test after regular opener Salman Butt was dropped owing to his bad form. Fawad, who normally plays in the middle order, was given the tough assignment to open and he did reasonably well in his new role. In the first innings, when the wickets were tumbling around him, he kept his composure and made a steady 18 before falling to a good delivery. In the second innings, Pakistan needed a solid start at the top given the fact that they were 150 runs behind Sri Lanka's first innings score. Fawad batted responsibly playing but kept the scoreboard moving at the same time. The southpaw hasn't got a big repertoire of shots but played well within his limits and made good use of his talent. He knitted a good opening partnership with fellow Karachi teammate Khurram Manzoor. Both added 85 for the first wicket which laid a good platform for Pakistan to build their second innings. While Khurram fell after making 38, Fawad Alam continued and scored his maiden Test fifty off just 67 balls. Just before the close, Fawad completed a fluent hundred off only 151 balls (first Pakistani to do it abroad). He ended the day at 102 not out off 153 balls including six fours and a six. His partnership with skipper Younis Khan has yielded 93 and he will be required to carry on.
