6 Uzbek suicide bombers dead in Bannu clash

BANNU - At least six suicide attackers, said to be Uzbeks, were killed and a policeman got injured on Thursday when law enforcement agencies repulsed a pre-dawn attack on a police station in Bunnu district.

At around 5:30am a group of armed militants attacked Maryan police station, some 14 kilometres south of Bannu. At that time only a few policemen were present in the police station as their other colleagues along with other security forces’ men have been sent to nearby Nawaz Abad locality for raid on suspected militant hideouts.
The militants attacked the police station from three different sites, triggering a fierce gun battle that continued for about two and a half hours. Initially, the attackers hurled hand grenades and tried force their entry into the police station, but they failed to get inside.
By then, other policemen and security forces personnel also arrived and joined the fight. As a result of the heavy firing, three attackers were killed by the law enforcers while the remaining three detonated their suicide vests themselves. Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed the attack.
Bannu DIG Nisar Tanoli said the attack was successfully thwarted and six militants were killed. During the fight, a policeman was injured and the police station was slightly damaged.
