MMA, minus JI, all set to re-emerge in politics

September 15, 2012

ISLAMABAD - The coalition partners of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) are once again planning to re-emerge in national politics but this time it might not involve Jamaat-i-Islami as its member.
The main partners of MMA including Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP), Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith, Tehreek-e-Jafria are all set to hold serious talks for reunification sans JI in the last week of this month, well-placed sources told TheNation.
"The religious group is all set to hold important meeting on Sep 24th and if Jamaat-e-Islami does not give consent, the group would reemerge without this major pillar," they said.
It would not be out of place to mention here that the major reasons behind non-reunification of MMA is largely considered reservations between the two major components Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), which have been at loggerheads since long time.
When contacted, JI senior leader Ghafoor Haideri confirmed that they were going to hold decisive meeting on September 24th to decide the future of MMA.
"If JI will not give its nod than MMA would be restored without involving them in this group," he said ,adding, that JI is in contact with PML-N and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) and now ball is in their court to decide their final affiliation.
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has certain reservations on JUI-F as they argued that if JUI-F had decided to sit on Opposition benches in Centre, why the same decision was not practiced in Balochistan.
Considering it a one of major hurdles of split, JI had also quoted the example of PML-N for sitting on Opposition benches in the Centre, but they are in government in Punjab.
JI also has also some reservations from its former coalition partners for holding the Chairmanship of Kashmir Committee, as they consider this slot has been given with the consent of PPP-led government.
The JUI-F had opted to sit on Opposition benches because the former Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani sacked Azam Swati from the slot of Federal Minister for Science and Technology on alleged Haj scam.
On the other hand, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Chief Munawar Hassan has also been reported as a big hurdle in restoration of the MMA.
