DIAMER - At least eight people including five members of a family drowned in the River Indus on Sunday when steel rope of a lift installed to cross the river broke down due to overloading in Gesbala locality of District Diamer.
Locals had set up a lift on self-help basis to cross the river as the suspension bridge was swept away by floods in August 2010. On Sunday, eight people were crossing the river when steel rope of the lift broke down due to overweight. As a result, they all were swept away by the gushing water. Rescue teams and locals reached the scene and started search for the dead but no one was recovered.
They include Rasheed, Rab Nawaz, Baidol Khan, Basharatullah, Khalid Iqbal, Attaullah, Farhatullah, Inayatullah, and a son of Subhan Shah.
