QUETTA – A suicide bomber blew up his explosive-laden car at a checkpost on Qambarani Road in Quetta overnight killing five people including four Frontier Corps (FC) men and a personnel of secret agencies, security sources said on Saturday. Suicide bomber was also killed in the blast.
According to security sources, the personnel of law enforcement agencies were checking vehicles at Sharifabad Chowk on Qambarani Road when a suspicious Toyota vehicle appeared on the scene. The security personnel signaled the vehicle to stop for search but the driver blew up explosives-laden vehicle as it approached nearer.
As a result, four personnel of Frontier Corps and an official of secret agencies were killed while suicide bomber was also blown into pieces. “The blast was so powerful that it completely destroyed the vehicle and shook entire area,” sources said, adding, the suicide bomber wanted to target some specific place but it failed to reach the target and exploded his explosive-laden vehicle to avoid arrest.
According to FC spokesman they had information that terrorists could carry out attack during Eid days and explosive-laden vehicle was being brought to the city. “Following the information law enforcement agencies beefed up security at all exit and entry points. An accused, on Qambarani Road, when asked to stop exploded his Toyota vehicle at 12:50 AM. As a result four FC personnel and an official of secret agencies were martyred in the blast,” he added. Police and other law enforcement agencies rushed to the scene after the blast, cordoned off the area and started collecting evidence from the site.
Station House Officer Shalkot Police Station Muktiar Ahmed told this scribe that police had taken three hand grenades and one pistol into custody from the incident site. “Over 80-kilogram explosives were used in the blast,” bomb disposal squad sources said. A police official said the body parts of alleged suicide bomber had been collected, however, his identification was yet to be made.
Meanwhile, IGFC Major General Obaidullah Khan has paid rich tributes to martyred FC personnel for saving Quetta city from a huge destruction and reiterated the resolve that FC personnel would offer any sacrifice to ensure peace in Quetta and the province. He further said that FC would never allow the handful of terrorist elements to become success in the designs.
Agencies add: FC spokesman Murtaza Baig said the alleged terrorist may have planned to target some military installation or a public place during Eid. “The soldiers sacrificed their lives to foil a major terror attack,” he added. There was no claim of responsibility for the latest incident.
