Tenure of four PHC judges extended

ISLAMABAD  - President Asif Ali Zardari Wednesday on the advice of the Prime Minister approved extensions in the tenure of four additional judges of Peshawar High Court and also approved appointment of four additional judges of the same high court.

The judges whose tenure has been extended include; Justice Khalid Mehmood (extension till the date of superannuation), Justice Nisar Hussain Khan (extension for one year), Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth (extension for one year) and Justice Qaiser Rashid (extension for one year).
The summary received from the Prime Minister’s office said that the nominations for extension as additional judges of Peshawar High Court were received on June 30, 2012 from Secretary Judicial Commission of Pakistan, Islamabad, for confirmation by the Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment in Superior Courts.
It said that Parliamentary Committee, due to lack of quorum on the two fixed dates of its meeting (11th & 13th July, 2012) was not able to confirm the nominations within the stipulated time period of 14 days. Therefore, it said the nominations are deemed to have been confirmed under clause 12 of Article 175 A of the Constitution. The nominations, deemed to have been confirmed, were forwarded to the Prime Minister for advising the President to accord his approval also to these extensions. Accordingly, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister, the President approved the extension in tenure of the four additional judges of Peshawar High Court.
The President, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has also approved the appointment of four additional judges of Peshawar High Court. The judges who have been appointed are: Mrs Irshad Qaiser, D&SJ, Shah Jehan Khan Akhunzada, D&SJ, Roohul Amin Khan, lawyer and Assadullah Khan Chamkani, lawyer.
The summary in this regard said that the nominations of the above persons for appointment as additional judges of Peshawar High Court were received on June 30, 2012, from Secretary Judicial Commission of Pakistan, Islamabad, for confirmation by the Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment in Superior Courts. It said that Parliamentary Committee could not confirm these nominations within the stipulated time period of fourteen days. Therefore, the nominations were deemed to have been confirmed under clause 12 of Article 175 A of the Constitution.
The nominations were then forwarded to the Prime Minister for advising the President to accord his approval also to the said appointments as Additional Judges of Peshawar High Court.
