LAHORE - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the government is determined to establish writ of state at all costs and the state has the right to take every pre-emptive step for protection of its citizens.
The Prime Minster said this while chairing a meeting on law and order here on Friday wherein he was also given a presentation on Special Counter Terrorism Force in Punjab.
The prime minister directed that the new force should be raised immediately with a new command structure and it should be professionally sound, competent and adequately paid. He said an efficient and effective counter-terror force is need of the time and he expected the new force will also help in eliminating extortionists and target killers.
PM Nawaz said “law enforcement agencies need to show zero tolerance towards heinous crimes”. In this regard, he said, “We have promulgated laws which would deal with the enemies of the state within the framework of the constitution and the principles laid down by founding fathers of the state.”
“Terrorists, target killers and extortionists will be dealt under the law and they will be punished after due process. If terrorists and killers have any understanding of the word of liberty, they will realise its meaning when they will be denied of that under the new law,” he averred. Target killers and extortionists must understand that rules of engagement for such war are different and stricter, he added.
Earlier on the Eid day while talking to party workers at his Raiwind residence, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif blamed the past governments for failing to adopt any concrete step to counter terrorism and extremism in the country. Contrary to past governments, he said, the PML-N government has taken initiatives to consolidate the laws to curb terrorism and for this, it is taking all political parties along and acting under a consensual policy.
On the recent increase in the power tariff, Nawaz said it has been made under compulsion, and he promised to cut down the electricity rates as soon as major energy projects become operational. He said he was well aware of the plight of the people but the economic and other problems besetting the country have obliged his government to take tough decisions.
In the presence of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and former President Rafiq Tarar, Nawaz said the PML-N government took over when the country was passing through a very difficult period of its history. He said his government was looking for a lasting solution to the current problems for which he and his colleagues were making untiring efforts. He said his government was making amends for the failures of the past governments in curbing terrorism and lawlessness.
On the situation in Karachi, the premier said efforts for peace were being made in that city by rising above political considerations. It is result of the government efforts that a marked reduction is being witnessed in the incidents of target killings, extortions and street crime. He said the people of Karachi were much satisfied and pleased with the government steps.
