Troika takes up Balochistan unrest, elections

ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari had a detailed session with Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani over the fast deteriorating law and order situation, particularly in Balochistan, and the ways and means to bring things under control.

Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf had a meeting with President Zardari at Awan-i-Sadr on Tuesday. Later, Chief of Army Staff Gen also joined them and various options to bring normalcy in restive Balochistan came under discussion.
Federal Law Minister Farooq H Naek also briefed the meeting on the legal and constitutional aspects of adopting various options including granting more powers to the Frontier Constabulary or provide some role to Army to bring things under control.
The overall law and order situation in the country in the backdrop of the upcoming elections and the role of Armed Forces in the smooth conduct of the elections also figured up in the meeting.
Sources aware of the deliberations of the meeting informed The Nation that the main focus of the meeting remained on the law and order situation particularly in Balochistan where things were turning worse; even the imposition of Governor’s Rule had failed to bring any respite in the ongoing spate of violence. Sources said the COAS assured complete support to the government in bringing peace to Balochistan within the ambit of the constitution.
