LAHORE - Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Saturday said ‘some people’ wanted to get him removed through unconstitutional means, but he won’t quit to anyone’s wishes. If anybody had the guts to remove him, he could do so by adopting the constitutional course; but he would continue to stay in power as long as people who elected him were with him, Gilani said while addressing 3rd convocation of Virtual University here at the Expo Centre.“The time for using unconstitutional methods to oust prime minister is over now... I have come into power with peoples’ support and not through backdoors”, the prime minister told students and faculty members. Commenting on PML-N’s protest movement, Mr Gilani said the Nawaz Sharif‘s hue and cry was an attempt to cover up his own contempt of court he made in his tenure.Without naming anybody, he said, ‘some people’ wanted to end the development process his government has started. But it was clear he was referring to the PML-N leadership as he was quick to attack the ruling party in Punjab that has taken to distribute laptops among the students to lure them. Gilani criticised the scheme, telling them that actual problem was provision of jobs to the unemployed. And then he went on to telling the young and impressionable minds the tale of his government’s perfect programmes for turning this country into a technological wonderland. The PM said his government was working on 3G technology project and 36 IT centres had been established across the country. He said federal government had set up over 1,000 broadband centres in all the union councils of the country that will provide 30,000 jobs to the students this year. “I have also asked the ministry of finance to create 100,000 jobs in the coming budget.”Telling the audience that his government had already spent Rs22 billion on the development of IT infrastructure and broadband connectivity, he announced additional Rs17 billion for extension of broadband to other areas of the country. He also directed the IT minister to expedite work on 3G technology. This technology, he said, would bring about a revolution and create employment opportunities for the youth.Gilani said that education in general and education of science and technology in particular was a matter of survival for the nation. He said that 21st century was a century of knowledge, creativity and innovation and only those nations would be calling the shots on political and economic landscape that would lead in the field of knowledge. The prime minister announced establishment of 30 more campuses of Virtual University throughout the country including Fata, AJ&K and Gilgit-Baltistan, besides the IT Award of Rs20 million for the talented students from the backward areas of the country. The premier also announced that PAK-SAT satellite will provide one hour free transmission facility to the Virtual University. He directed for provision of land for the construction of central campus of Virtual University in Islamabad and ordered the CDA to report in two weeks. The prime minister said, “We need to ask ourselves some hard questions. Are we preparing ourselves for the challenges of globalisation? Do we have what it takes to excel and make a mark in the world? Are our educational institutions producing students capable of taking leadership roles in future?... We need to ponder whether the kind of education our institutions are imparting is relevant to the demands of industry, economy and modern age.”“Pakistan is gifted with a sizable young population with great potential. Let this youth potential be converted into a demographic dividend through human resource development. Provision of quality education was a key in the development of this resource. We need our students and youths to be proud of their heritage. They must have the capabilities to convert the vision of a developed Pakistan into reality.”Commending the role of Virtual University, he said the institution had done a good job by imparting quality education and preparing these graduates for the challenges of personal and professional life. The Virtual University’s vision of an educated Pakistan was in line with his government’s determination to provide an affordable and quality education to all, he added.“I want this university to undertake expansion projects and increase its nationwide presence. I have already approved, in principle, the setting of one custom built Virtual University Campus in every district of the country. I am very glad to hear that first four campuses under this initiative have already started functioning.”PM Gilani maintained his government was driven by the vision to create a society based on quality education for all, freedom of expression, universal access to information and knowledge. “The current enrolment of students in higher education needs to be significantly increased over the coming years”, he stressed.Gilani said it was for the first time in the history of Pakistan that educational facilities of great quality were available to students from small towns like Chitral, Pishin and Ghotki. “Though education is a provincial subject now after the passage of 18th constitutional amendment, however, we will continue to work for promotion of education.”
