KARACHI – Acting Sindh Governor Nisar Ahmed Khuhro signed the Revived Sindh Local Government Ordinance 1979 Bill-2013 after Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad left for London on Friday morning.
Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq, Law Minister Muhammad Ayaz Soomro, Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and others were present at the Governor House when Khuhro signed the new bill.
The acting governor said that after his signature on the bill, the Local Government Ordinance 1979 had came into effect.
Sharjeel Memon told the media that the ordinance was revived on the demand of the people.
He added that the country was facing the menace of terrorism and all parties should get united to eradicate it.
Meanwhile, the MQM nominated Syed Sardar Ahmed its parliamentary leader and submitted an application to the assembly secretary for his confirmation as the opposition leader.
The MQM lawmakers urged the speaker to issue the notification declaring Syed Sardar Ahmed as the opposition leader.
The application says that the MQM is the second largest party in the Sindh Assembly having 50 MPAs and it has decided to sit on opposition benches, therefore they should be allotted opposition benches and office of the opposition leader for Sardar Ahmed.
The nominated opposition leader is a former bureaucrat who has command over rules and legislation process.
Soft spoken Sardar Ahmed is a respected person not only in his party but also among other parties in the Sindh Assembly.
His job as opposition leader can be tough because he, contrary to his party, is a soft spoken man.
MQM leader Faisal Sabzwari said that the PPP stabbed the back of the people of Sindh by repealing the Sindh People’s Local Government Act-2012.
He went on to say that MQM is the second largest party in the Sindh Assembly with 51 MPAs, hoping that the speaker would issue the notification confirming Syed Sardar Ahmed as the opposition leader immediately.
