Sale of cigarettes to minors prohibited

BAHAWALPUR - DCO Dr Naeem Rouf directed the Health Department Officers to conduct a survey about smoking and its business and its use.

He expressed these views while chaired a meeting on ‘diseases caused by smoking’ here the other day.
The network for consumer’s protection Project Coordinator Dr Hassan Mehmood, Advocacy Officer Rubina Bhatti, DO Health Dr Saeed Asghar, EDO-Education Mrs Naeem Mansoor and officers of Excise and Taxation Department were present on the occasion.
The DCO said that selling of cigarette to minors had been prohibited and it must be stopped.
He further said that advertisement of cigarette must be discouraged. He added that tobacco control policy must be followed and spread awareness about the bad effects of smoking in the society.
On the occasion, Network for Consumer’s Protection Project Coordinator said that according to a survey, every year more than 100 thousand people die of smoking and 1,200 children start smoking everyday.
He further said that more than 5,000 people were admitted to the hospitals with the diseases caused by smoking.
Dr Hassan Mehmood said that monitoring survey over smoking was being conducted in the 10 cities Included Bahawalpur.
Benazir’s birth anniversary observed: Like other parts of the country, the 59th birthday anniversary of the former Prime Minister and slain Chairman of PP Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was observed here in a befitting manner.  Quran Khawani was held at different points including the residence of the PPP pioneer worker Khalid Masroor Pirzada.  The PPP workers offered fateha for the departed soul of the former Shaheed BB and former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. They paid rich tributes to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
The party workers led by PPP Divisional Coordinator Saleem Bhatti also setup a blood donation camp to mark the day. On the occasion, a number of workers donated blood.
One day workshop held at IUB : On the special directive of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Mukhtar, a one day training workshop was held in the video conference room here the other day.
The workshop was organised by the Quality Enhancement Cell in collaboration with Higher Education Commission.
The objective of the workshop was to impart training about the application and methodology for improvement in the academic standards.
Library Science Department faculty member Dr Farzana Shafiq highlighted the roadmap for addition in academic standards, preparation of curriculum, provision of laboratories and computer and guidance of the students. Similarly, lectures about the faculty and inter-institutional collaboration and relevant matters were also delivered. The participating teachers from all campuses discussed various proposals about the enhancement in academic and research standards.
