Schoolteachers being trained under anti-child labour project

SUKKUR – Additional Deputy Commissioner Mubeen Elahi shared achievements of the Combating Abusive Child Labour (CACL-II) Project during an event here the other day. The project has been funded by the European Union and technically assisted by International Labour Organisation (ILO).  Elahi said that five action programmes were designed to make Sukkur a model district in its efforts to combat Worst Forms of Child Labour (WFCL). He said that five action programmes have been developed under CACL-II Project like district coordination committee on child labour issues is fully functional, headed by the Sukkur DC, a District Child Labour Unit has been established at the Commissioner's office, a complaint box is also available to receive any complaint about child labour, he added. According to ADC, the key government officials have been sensitised on child labour issues and are providing support in different interventions as well as 500 teachers for government-run primary schools have been trained on child labour issues. These teachers are supporting the mainstreaming of former child labourers into the government schools. The Sukkur Education Department has also prepared the first draft of District Education Plan (DEP), focusing on the elimination of WFCL and it has been sent to the Sindh Secretary Education for approval.

Giving details about recommendation of the education plan, ILO’s representative Asfaque Ahmed said these require to assess the current situation of non-functional schools and make them functional through diversified approaches, call for undertaking measures to remove the gender gap among teachers and students besides expanding the network of schools in the far flung areas of Salehpat, Pano Aqil and rural areas of Rohri as well as emphasise on taking measures to maintain the student-teacher ratio as per criteria. He said another recommendation is to review the teacher employment policy in order to absorb those teachers who are currently working with different NGOs.
The administration is in the process of establishing Child Labour Monitoring System and as a first step, data has been collected from 11 Union Councils.
 In the next step, the data shall be collected from all the 35 Union Councils which would help  develop policies.
