ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari has said that drone attacks are not only a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty but are counterproductive. He said that during a meeting with US Ambassador Richard Olson at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Thursday.According to the president’s spokesman, both discussed bilateral relations and the development projects in Pakistan being done under the USAID.Sources said that President Zardari conveyed to the US ambassador concerns over drone attacks and said that such attacks are not only violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty but are counterproductive. He said that drone strikes complicated the anti-terror drive. “Such attacks fuel anti US sentiments and are killing civilians.” The president said that US guidelines over drone attacks in Pakistan needed to be reviewed. Stressing on enhanced intelligence sharing to combat militancy in tribal areas, he said ‘our forces are well equipped and competent enough to handle terrorists’. Zardari said that due to huge sacrifices rendered by armed forces ‘we have broken the back of terrorists’. Sources added that the president assured the envoy that the government was committed to holding free and fair elections on time. He hoped that Olsen’s tenure as ambassador would serve to burnish Pak-US relations.
