PML-N demands ‘political’ governors’ removal

LAHORE – Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan say that 60 days are sufficient for holding general elections while 90-day time for this purpose will be an additional burden on the national exchequer.Talking to the media in Raiwind on Wednesday, he said that the PML-N wanted elections to be held in minimum time.Nisar demanded replacement of governors to ensure transparent polls, saying that governors were appointed on political grounds and they could not be unbiased. “The PML-N does not trust any governor and they must go along with the provincial governments.” He said that he had suggested to the Election Commission of Pakistan to replace governors, chief secretaries, IGPs and the head of other departments before the elections. On the interim setup, Nisar said the PML-N had initiated the consultative process with opposition parties three months ago. “The party has short listed six names after consultations and a joint meeting of all opposition parties would be convened to finalise two names.”The opposition leader said the opposition parties would also present two names for the caretaker chief minister for each province to the government. He said:“The federal government intends to ‘steal’ the election in Sindh and Balochistan but the opposition would not let it do.”To a question, he said that given the dwindling economic condition of the country and ever present terrorism, delay in elections would be disastrous. On the death of NAB investigator Kamran Faisal, who was deputed to probe the RPP case, he said the fact of the mysterious killing of Kamran must be unearthed so that people could know whether it was a murder or suicide. He called for a judicial commission to probe into the death of Kamran. “The commission should not be formed by the government.”Commenting on the long march of Dr Tahirul Qadri, Nisar called it a drama staged to fool the masses and derail democracy. On news provinces, he said: “It is just a political stunt of the PPP which is not serious about creating southern Punjab province. The PML-N also wants creation of more provinces but that must come through the procedure laid down in the Constitution.”Commenting on Raja Afzal’s joining to the PPP, he said Raja did it when he had no hope of getting ticket from the PML-N for the next election. The coming polls would bring out the outcome of Raja and Sardar Saifuddin Khosa’s joining to the PPP. However, he said, he was surprised over Khosa’s decision, adding that Khosa had become disobedient in his family. He said the PML-N would end terrorism in Karachi and Quetta, besides taking vital decisions on economic uplift after coming into power. The PML-N selected six names for the caretaker prime minister after consulting with opposition parties; however JUI-F chief Maulana Fazalur Rahman sought time to give its suggestion. The shortlisted people are: Former Supreme Court Bar Association president Asma Jahangir, former Supreme Courtjudges Nasir Aslam Zahid, Shakirullah Jan, and Ajmal Mian, Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mahmood Khan Achekzai and Balochistan National Party-Mengal leader Sardar Ataulla Mengal. Sources say that after receiving names from opposition parties including the PTI, the PML-N will call a meeting of them to finalise two names which would be presented to the prime minster. According to the Constitution, opposition leader and the prime minister will propose two names each for the caretaker premier. If they fail to pick a man for the job, the matter will be referred to a bipartisan committee of parliament. And if the committee also fails to reach a decision, the names will be referred to the ECP which is authorised to decide.
