Bilour spurns calls to retract bounty offer

ISLAMABAD- Federal Minister for Railways Ghulam Ahmad Bilour said that come what may, he would not withdraw the statement wherein he had announced head money for the producer of profane film against the Holy Prophet (PBUH).To a question, he said that so far he has no word on the matter with the Prime Minister or the party leadership and admitted that he had announced, on his own accord, the bounty for the killer of the US man who had produced the blasphemous film. However, sources aware of the behind the scene developments informed The Nation that Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf had talked with Awami National Party leadership and asked them to persuade Ghulam Ahmad Bilour to withdraw the statement, as such a statement by a Federal Cabinet member has placed the government in an awkward position.Sources further said that Acting President of ANP Haji Adeel had assured the Prime Minister that they would take up the matter in the party meeting, but showed his limitation of taking action against a senior party leader. He, however, dissociated party from Ghulam Ahmad Bilour’s statement, saying that all what Ghulam Ahmad Bilour uttered had nothing to do with the party policy, as ANP believed in the philosophy of non-violence.Sources in Prime Minister’s House further said the PM had also talked to younger borthers of Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, Senator Ilyas Ahmad Bilour and Senior Minister in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhawa government Bashir Ahmad Bilour and requested them to persuade their senior brother to take back his statement to avoid further embarrassment to the coalition government.Sources in Awami National Party (ANP) said that Acting President of the party Haji Adeel was not in a position to take action against senior Bilour and he had done all what he could be dissociating the party from the statement and leaving the matter for final decision to the party President Asfandyar Wali Khan who is abroad nowadays.Sources in the party said that Bilour brothers were very powerful in the party and no one could take action against them except the party president.Sources in the party were of the view that Bilour brothers, particularly Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, was having close relations with Mian Nawaz Sharif and in prevailing circumstances the ANP leadership could not afford to lose veterans like Bilour borthers when general elections were approaching.Sources recalled that after the last elections in 2008 when the ANP President had made his nephew Amir Haider Hoti Chief Minister of KPK instead of Bashir Bilour, Nawaz Sharif had given an open offer to Ghulam Ahmad Bilour to join PML-N, but he had politely declined the offer.
