SHC bars govt from shutting mobile phone services

KARACHI  – The Sindh High Court on Thursday barred Interior Minister Rehman Malik from shutting down mobile phone services in the country on Eid to prevent any possible act of terrorism.A two-member SHC bench, comprising Justice Maqbool Baqir and Justice Nadeem Akhtar, has bound the government to get permission from the president of Pakistan if it intended to suspend mobile phone services. A petitioner, Nehal Hashmi, filed a petition in the SHC, maintaining that access to information was among the fundamental rights and the government could block the cellular phone services only by the approval of the president. The SHC ruled that the services could only be shut down in certain circumstances and in a specific area on the orders of the head of the state.
