Memo case: SC issues notice to Interior Secretary

The Supreme Court Monday issued a notice to the Interior Secretary and directed him to explain why Hussain Haqqani and his counsel had not been informed over security measures to be taken for the former ambassador.

A nine-member larger bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising other judges, Justice Nasirul Mulk, Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja, Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, Justice Tariq Parvez, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sh. Azmat Saeed heard the proceedings of the controversial Memogate case.
During the hearing, Asma Jahangir, who is counsel for Hussain Haqqani, said regardless of the court’s directives, she could not bring her client back to Pakistan. Responding to which, the Chief Justice stated the Interior Ministry had decided to provide security to the former ambassador.
Asma Jahangir said despite her having written two letters to the Interior Ministry, she had not been contacted over her request. The Chief Justice remarked that the bench wanted to know why Hussain Haqqani had failed to appear before it.
Then, the SC issued a notice to the Interior Secretary and directed him to explain why Hussain Haqqani and his counsel had not been informed over security measures to be taken for the former ambassador.
Subsequently, the SC adjourned hearing of the case till 12th Feb.
The case was brought to light by Mansoor Ijaz, a US citizen of Pakistani origin, when he accused former ambassador to the US Hussain Haqqani of writing a memo to US army chief Admiral Mike Mullen seeking the country’s help against a possible military coup in Pakistan.
