LAHORE - A senior leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Senator Pervaiz Rashid, on Friday said his party was trying to protect the anti-government from being divided through the differences among the political parties on the opposition side.“The PML-N is inclined towards forming a broad-based understanding among the opposition parties to pressurising the government to hold elections at the earliest and wants to interact with anyone at this critical juncture, which will help achieving the aim.”Pervaiz Rashid told this scribe that the PML-N’s policy was based on the desire not to let those forces come into power again which had caused hardships and sufferings to the people and the country.About the strategy evolved for the purpose, he said the efforts being made were currently low profile; “however, the JUP, PML-Likeminded, PPP-Sherpao are with them (PML-N).”With reference to the meeting between the JI and the PTI leadership, given the JI leaders had earlier met with the PML-N counterparts, he said his party believed in contacts and talks were part of politics, and the door to the exercise should never be closed. However, Pervaiz said both the parties had similarities on many issues like resentment against the government’s defiance towards the Supreme Court decisions, its anti-people policies and adventurism against judiciary to curtail its powers and on the issue of early elections, yet the talks between the leaders on both sides were incipient and on limited agenda. The PML-N leader said the support of others parties always remained a need of any political party, even if it won the elections. To a question on the appointment of new chief election commissioner, Pervaiz said it required a two-thirds majority which was hard to achieve, therefore, a person should be appointed with consensus of all the parties to fill the important slot.He did not express any fears about impartiality and neutrality of the caretaker set up before the next election on the plea that the 20th Amendment has devised a consultative procedure at the central and provincial level, wherein role of the president in the caretaker setup is marginalised.Senator Pervaiz said the PML-N strongly abhorred any chaos or disturbance in the country, resulting from the defiance of the government towards the apex court’s orders, which the Gilani government had displayed.“As such it believes that the early elections are the best option to avoid the situation and keep the democracy on track.”He said delay in elections would also take away the meagre credit the government might have on account of its acts like the NFC Award and restoration of 1973 Constitution to its original shape.
