Clinical West Indies beat Ireland by 44 runs
Devo n Smith's brilliant century and Kieron Pollard's 94 off just 55 balls helped West Indies beat Ireland by 44 runs in their Group A game at the PCA Stadium on Friday. Though Ed Joyce, with his precious 84 off 102, kept his team in hunt of chasing down 276, once the southpaw departed others batsmen fell like a pack of cards and the team eventually skittled for 231. Left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn picked up four wickets, while skipper Darren Sammy took three wickets. Joyce kept the scoreboard ticking with well-stolen singles and occasional boundaries in Ireland run chase. He was also involved in key partnerships with skipper William Porterfield, Niall O'Brien and Gary Wilson. Both skipper Porterfield and Niall O'Brien supported Joyce well during their short stay at the wicket. Earlier, Kieron Pollard launched a typically brutal late assault to send West Indies to 275 all out against Ireland after the West Indies was asked to bat first in their World Cup match on Friday.
