He said, the championship is sponsored by Ch Daniyal Tanveer who had provided Rs .3 million which would be distributed among the players. Punjab Squash Association or Pakistan Squash Federation have denied help to RDSA in organising the event, he added.
“Legend players Roshan Khan also belonged to Rawalpindi and we want to pay a tribute to him and wanted to bring old glory days of Pakistan squash back, and that is the main reason behind organizing this championship”, he said.
Replying to a query regarding the construction of squash academy in Rawalpindi, Aamir said they have already started work on the project and by the Grace of God would complete an international standard squash academy very soon.
Ch Daniyal said: “I feel proud to announce that our family had always supported healthy sporting activities and that is the main reason we have decided to organize this championship”, Jhanda Chichi had produced many great players in squash, hockey, cricket and other sports, he said and added he announces that his company would raise an international standard squash court equipped with latest facilities at Chakkri road soon to provide facilities to players at cheaper rates. He said that he would continue to support RDSA in future also in squash besides other sports.
RDSA Secretary Naeem Anwer, Zonal Squash Association VP Qazi Nadeem and Benazir Squash Complex Secretary Zaheer Iqbal were also present during the press conference.
Around 200 players from across the country will participate in the championship in which 5 different categories U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17 and U-19 events would be contested. U-11 and U-13 matches would be played at Shalimar Club while the rest of the categories would be held at Benazir Squash Complex Liaquat Bagh.
Qualifying round matches will be played today (Thursday) while the main round will start from Friday. The quarter-finals would be held on Saturday and semi-finals on Sunday and final on Monday.
