LAHORE - Wapda retained the national senior weightlifting championship title with a sterling show and gathered 130 points concluded here at Punjab University old campus ground here on Monday.
Railways lifters struck unmatched performance by making an almost clean sweep of the medals , winning seven golds, out of eight contested in the two premier activity. Higher Education Commission challenged the might of Wapda by winning one gold.
Railways took the runners up place having won 54 points as Army finished at third place with 52 points. Wapda's lifters showed prowess and technique to dominate the event with their lifting abilities which were cheered by a big gathering. Wapda got the first gold in the 56 kgs through Abdullah Ghafoor, Ishtiaq Ghafoor led Wapda to the second gold in the 62kgs as Akbar Ali gave Wapda's its third gold after performing to highest level in 69kg.
Wapda were denied success by HEC's Habib Asghar in the 85kg who surprised everyone with his courage and technique to win the gold in 85kg. Wapda continued its sparkling run by winning three more gold for retaining the title in style. Usman Amjad won the 94kgs gold, Tahir Mahmud took the gold in 105kgs and Rizwan Lodhi got the above 105 kgs gold.
President, Pakistan Olympic Association, Lt Gen (retd), Syed Arif Hasan was the chief guest on the occasion and gave away the medals and prizes to the notable performers. Secretary Pakistan Weightlifting Federation, Hafiz Imran Butt was also present.
