ISLAMABAD - Former great Sarfaraz Nawaz on Sunday said Pakistan cricket team coach Dav Whatmore should have a say in selection matters as it can benefit the team and management in a lot of ways.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is in search of bowling for the national team, so he believes if Dav's opinion is also taken in the matter, then things might go more benefitting, Sarfaraz stated.
Commenting about the reports of Misbah-ul-Haq's tenure as captain of the Pakistan One-day and Twenty20 squads might come to an end, Sarfaraz said Shahid Afridi has already refused to lead the team in the shorter formats of the game and he believes M Hafeez is the best possible option to be given the captaincy responsibilities in the current circumstances, he said.
Sarfaraz said Misbah and Younus Khan are best for Test cricket and it’s better if they realise it now. Pakistan should induct young blood in the upcoming World Twenty20 Cup squad, he added. Hammad Azam, Ahmed Shahzad, Rameez Raja Jr, Imran Nazir, Asad Shafique and Azhar Ali, Sharjeel Khan, Usman Salahuddin, Awais Zia and many others performing well at domestic level are very talented players to play in the shorter format of the game.
Sarfaraz also praised the PCB chairman, Zaka Ashraf, for putting the game of cricket back on track. "I think Zaka has made an excellent start and will surely improve the image of cricket in the country in the days to come," he said.
Sarfaraz said the PCB selection committee should keep a stiff eye on the Faysal Bank Super Eights Twenty20 Cup underway at Rawalpindi, as it is the main platform from where Pakistan can get good players.
Chief selector Iqbal Qasim is a very talented guy and has flair to select the best available talent in the country, Sarfaraz said adding that Iqbal should pay frequent visits to the T20 Cup in order to observe and pick the talented players, he concluded.
