Gull wins Punjab Women Chess

LAHORE - Gull Rukh of Lahore won the Punjab Women Chess Championship 2012 by upsetting the top seed Samina Kanwal of Faisalabad here on Wednesday.

The champion remained unbeaten in all the five rounds of the championship. Samina Kanwal of Faisalabad was the runner-up while young prodigy Mehak surprised the spectators by clinching the third position.
The third position holder along with No 4 Maryam Nasir of Gujranwala and No 5 Hiba Shabkhez will represent Punjab in National Chess Championship at Karachi where five contestants from Punjab will compete for a place in the national team. The national women chess team along with the men's team is due to leave for International Chess Olympiad at Istanbul in August.
Chess Association of Punjab president Dr Naeem Hamid gave away the prizes to the winners and reiterated his support for the promotion of chess in women and children. He also thanked the organisational efforts of Waqar Ahmad Madni.
