Pakistans UN Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon and visiting Senator Zahid Khan Saturday fervently appealed to the Pakistani-Americans to donate generously donations to enable the Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa government provide relief to nearly a million people marooned by flash floods. At a joint press conference in a local restaurant, they said that most of the province has been battered by torrential rains that have deluged villages, towns and cities and uprooting tens of thousands of people, most of them without any shelter. The senator, who belongs to ANP, said that a special fund has been set up by the KP chief minister and any help by compatriots here would go a long way in easing the plight of the people. In the affected areas, he said, the infrastructure had been wiped outthere was no way to communicate as the phone system had collapsed, roads have been washed away making it extremely difficult to reach the marooned people. On top of this, there was no electricity. Ambassador Haroon backed the appeal and called on the Pakistani community to play their part in helping their brethren who have lost everythingtheir homes and belongings. The Pakistan envoy also told reporters that he would be meeting top UN officials on Monday in an effort to move the world body to issue a Flash Appeal for funds to help the Pakistan government cope with the emergency in Pakistan. He said he has already had a preliminary meetings with relevant UN officials on Friday during which he briefed them about the deteriorating situation resulting from the natural disaster. As a result, he said, UN agencies were already in actiontrying to alleviate the situation of people dislodged by surging waters.
