Attacks attempt to stifle democratic voice: Mirwaiz

The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has described series of attacks against him as an attempt to stifle democratic voice and an attack on freedom of speech and civility.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, while addressing a press conference at Foreign Correspondents' Club here, said that Indian agencies were behind the attacks to foil the APHC campaign to make the people of India aware of the ground situation in the occupied territory. He asked Indian political parties and civil society to come out and condemn such attacks.
He said, "On one hand, they want to talk to us, appoint interlocutors and, on the other, when we come to interact and talk to Indian public, they attack us. It is unacceptable." He said that such behaviour would have serious repercussions in occupied Kashmir.
Referring to recent filing of sedition cases against veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, prominent Indian author, Arundhati Roy and others, he maintained that Hurriyet leaders could not be subdued by such tactics.
The Mirwaiz said the world looks India as economic destination but it is not possible without peace and political stability in the region. Emphasising that the ongoing Kashmir liberation movement was totally indigenous, he criticised attempts to link it with militancy, worldwide terror networks and Maoists in India.
Earlier, as he reached the venue to address foreign media correspondents, a group of hooligans associated with the Bhartiya Janata Part's youth wing attacked the car of the APHC Chairman with stones and bottles, damaging its windscreen. However, the Mirwaiz remained unhurt.
It is to mention here that this was the third attack on the APHC Chairman in the last five days. Earlier, he was attacked by the Hindu extremists on November 25 in Chandigarh and on November 28 in Kolkata.
