Parliament to decide Musharraf's fate: PM

DUBAI (APP/Online) - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the government through focussing on poverty alleviation and curbing price hike is committed to address the masses problems in accordance with the PPP manifesto and Shaheed Benazir Bhuttos mission. He also made it clear that the Parliament would decide the future of former president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf. Our focus is now on poverty alleviation and price-hike. The initiative of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) also targets the vulnerable segment of society, Premier Gilani said while talking to UAE-based PPP office bearers, workers and media representatives on late Sunday night. The prime minister, who had a brief stay in Dubai before proceeding to Libya for participation in the 40 years celebrations of Al-Fateh Revolution on the invitation of Libyan leadership, apprised party men of the governments multi-pronged policies to address various challenges faced by the country, of which security and economic development were the most urgent ones. He said the PPP-led government was utilising all available resources to tackle such issues by taking all the political forces on board. Prime Minister Gilani in this respect referred to the recent successful military operation in Swat and other parts of Malakand Division and said the officers and troops of Pakistan Army and other security forces laid their lives for defending their motherland. He said the PPP government by following the philosophy of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto laid the foundation of political reconciliation in the country and now all the major decisions were being taken with consensus, adding the parliamentary committee for constitutional reforms would soon finalise recommendations to resolve the issue of 17th Amendment and 58-2B. He also mentioned the abolition of centuries old FCR law and other reforms in the Federally Administered Frontier Areas (Fata) as a major step forward to bring the people of those areas in the mainstream. Similarly, the Prime Minister said, the cabinets approval of Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order 2009 will empower and provide autonomy to the people of Northern Areas. He said the government, being cognizant of the energy crisis, was taking short and long-term measures to counter the challenge. Describing overseas Pakistanis as an asset for the country, he said they were not only contributing to the countrys economic development but had always been at the forefront to help save their motherland whenever required. Assuring the PPP office bearers and workers to address their issues, he said would direct the federal and provincial ministers as well as the chief ministers to help address the problems of Pakistani expatriates. Later on, responding to questions by media persons, the prime minister referred to his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at Sharm el-Sheikh and said the two sides had agreed in principle that the dialogue was the only way forward for both the countries. He said Pakistan desired good relations with all neighbours, including India, on the basis of equality and dignity. Replying to a question about defaming of politicians by certain elements, the prime minister said politicians should demonstrate maturity and thwart such conspiracies. About former president Pervez Musharrafs trial, Gilani said all the political forces should play their role in strengthening the countrys democratic institutions so that no dictator could think of such actions in future. He said the Parliament was there to decide his fate and the government would accept any decision. If the parliament and institutions will be strong, no one would dare to take such actions, he remarked. Regarding Trial of Ex- President Musharraf, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani underlined Parliament will decide the future of former president Pervez Musharraf concerning his trial or not urging we will accept any decision. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani arrived here Monday on a three-day official visit to the Libyan capital to attend the 40th anniversary of Libyan revolution. The Prime Minister was warmly received by Libyan Minister for Transport and Communications Muhammad Zahidan as he arrived at the Tripoli International Airport. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Minister for Privatisation Syed Naveed Qamar also accompanied him. A red carpet was rolled out as the Prime Minister alighted from his aircraft. This is Prime Minister Gilanis first official visit to the north-African country since assuming office. He is expected to meet a number of world leaders who will also be in Libya to attend the celebrations. The Prime Minister will also hold meetings with Libyan leader Moammar Qaddafi, his Libyan counterpart Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmudi, ministers and notables. The visit is aimed at further strengthening the relations between the two countries. According to a statement by the Foreign Office, the visit signifies the importance Pakistan attaches to enhancing its bilateral ties with Libya which also currently chairs the African Union.
