Sedition proceedings against cricketers sought

LAHORE Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khwaja Muhammad Sharif Tuesday sought report and parawise comments for September 7 next from the federal secretary sports on a petition which seeks sedition proceedings against Pakistani cricketers for their alleged involvement in match-fixing scam and undermining vital national interests besides bringing bad name to the country. The petition has been filed by one Shakeel Ahmed, a cricket fan of Lahore, through his counsel Ishtiaq Ahmed Chaudhry, contending that the players committed an offence against the state of Pakistan, hence earned the shame for the whole Pakistani nation at the international level. After hearing arguments of petitioners counsel at the preliminary stage, the CJ required Deputy Attorney General Muhammad Ashraf Khan to get report and parawise comments on the petition from secretary sports for September 7, the next date of hearing. Federal secretary sports, PCB Chairman, Pakistani captain, Kamran Akmal (wicket keeper), Muhammad Amir and Muhammad Asif have been made respondents to the petition. The petitioners counsel pleaded that the players going against national interests sold name of the country by taking an amount of 150,000 pounds from a middle man, Mazhar Majeed, for match-fixing. The declaration of no- balls in the ground by Kamran Akmal, Muhammad Amir and Muhammad Asif at fixed time according to the video proved their 'offence before the whole world, the petitioner stated, praying for initiating criminal proceedings against them under Article 6 of the Constitution on high treason charges. He said they should be arrested as soon as they land on airport in the country. He said players have brought shame to the nation and gave a bad name to country of Pakistan by their involvement in match-fixing incident in UK. PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt should also be held equally responsible for the dirty exercise of match-fixing on foreign land, he said. He beseeched that PCB should put life-time ban on guilty players and also confiscate their assets and properties which they had made during cricket career so that an example may be set for other players. About PCB chairman, the petitioner requested the court that he as a PCB Chairman should be included in the investigation along with the players. He also pleaded for removing Ijaz Butt from the slot of PCB Chairman owing to the bad names that Pakistan cricket team earned for the country during his tenure.
