Opp stages walkout in Senate over POL price rise

ISLAMABAD The opposition benches in the Senate on Monday staged a token walkout of the session to protest the recent increase in prices of petroleum products and of power tariff amid reservations of the ruling coalition partners on the issue. JUI-F Senator Ismail Buledi from the treasury benches also joined the walkout. Prof Khurshid Ahmed termed the govt's decision of increasing prices of petroleum products as well as raise in power tariffs up to 2 percent after every month as unjustified saying that masses were already facing rising inflation. Leader of the Opposition, Waseem Sajjed said that the oil prices increase was like a bombshell on the masses, as high inflation rate had already made the lives of the people miserable. Senators from the treasury benches including ANP, MQM and JUI-F also showed their reservations over the increased oil prices. They said that the government has never bothered to take into confidence its coalition partners before taking such decision that was countered by Leader of the Opposition, Nayyer Bokhari who said that OGRA had decided to increase the POL prices and not the cabinet. The legislators also said that it would be a real setback for the industry that had already been ruined due to the bad law and order. Babar Ghauri of MQM urged the government to withdraw the notification of the oil prices increase adding that his party was not in the loop with the government took such decisions. Safdar Abassi also criticised the policies of his own party on the economy side and its decision for increase in POL prices and rise in power tariffs. The leaders the PPP-led coalition partners (MQM and ANP) levelled allegations and held responsible each other for the poor law and order in Karachi. They spoke on the floor of the house on an adjournment motion moved by Professor Khurshid Ahmed to discuss the bad law and order in the country. Parliamentary leader of ANP in the Upper House, Haji Adeel, implicitly criticised MQM holding it responsible for the poor law and order in Karachi. Land mafias, extortion groups, 'fitrana mafias and drug sellers are on the rise in Karachi, he said adding that many such groups operated in Karachi backed by political parties. He again reiterated his resolve to call in Army for a complete operation in Karachi. Peace can be attained in the metropolitan without its complete deweaponisation, Haji Adeel viewed. He said that many illegal Bengalese were living in the city for the past many years who were involved in many crimes. In response to the speech of Haji Adeel, Babar Gauri, Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping, said that Bengalese played a major role in passing the Pakistan Resolution, and who opposed the creation of Pakistan were talking against them. Ghauri pointing towards ANP said that all knew who had supported the culture of weapons, culture of narcotics and culture of land mafia. He was of the view that why did ANP only raise objections on law and order of Karachi despite the fact that its home province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was also hit by bad law and order. Senator Afrasayab Khattak rose on the floor of the House to counter the speech of Babar Ghauri forbidding him not to tell them who opposed the creation of Pakistan as if he spoke on the issue, it would challenge certain quarters. He said that his party condemned terrorism and target killings in any part of the country including Karachi. Dr Abdul Malik from Balochistan said that many people including youngsters were still being kidnapped and killed in many parts of his province. Balochistan is being handed over to land lords and it is the real time for the PPP-led government to negotiate and go into dialogue with the dissident groups in Balochistan, he added. The House was adjourned to meet again on Tuesday at 10:30 am after Prof Ibrahim remarked that it seemed that the ruling coalition partners had made collision government. Earlier, the Senate House Business Advisory Committee comprising heads of Parliamentary Parties represented in the Senate met at the Parliament House to discuss the modalities of the 65th Senate session that begun Monday.
