Ministers absence triggers walkout in Senate

ISLAMABAD (INP) Senate Chairman Farooq H Naik has asked the federal government to take appropriate measures for restoration of electricity in 16 districts of Balochistan. In his ruling in response to the points of order raised by some senators from Balochistan in the Senate on Saturday, the chairman took serious note of the absence of federal ministers from the House and directed the federal minister for water and power to submit a report regarding restoration of electricity in these districts till Tuesday next. It may be mentioned here that electricity in the 16 districts of the province had been suspended due to sabotage activities in which various electricity towers were destroyed. The chairman also asked the water and power minister to look into the feasibility of signing agreement with Iran to provide electricity to Panjgoor, Turbat and Gwadar districts of Balochistan. The House unanimously decided to resume debate on the presidential address to the joint sitting of the parliament on Tuesday. The senators expressed concern over the lack of interest of ministers in proceedings of the House and staged a token walk out from the House. A number of senators from the treasury benches also joined the token walk out. Earlier, the senators of ANP who were not taking part in the House proceeding under protest against the attitude of the chairman withdrew their decision and announced to participate in the House proceedings. The chairman referred the National Defence University Bill 2011 to the standing committee concerned for discussion. He directed the committee to submit its report on the bill within one month.
