World Press Freedom Day being celebrated today

Like other parts of the globe, World Press Freedom Day is being observed in Pakistan Sunday (May, 3) with an aim to encourage and develop press freedom initiatives and spur assessments of the state of press freedom. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) annual report said that South Asia journalists were working dangerous situation, as they face perils in discharging their duties. Threats to their jobs and lives have been on the increase, while for commercial reasons they were forced to make compromises. The report said that with the democratic changes in Pakistan, journalists are exercising their new rights of independence, but they were still facing hurdles of sorts. The report has also criticized the governments in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal failing to bring the murderers of journalists to justice. This report will be presented today in the media and dialogue regional Conference in Nepals capital, Katmandu.
