Bureaucracy reshuffle on the cards

ISLAMABAD - In the wake of significant expansion in the federal cabinet besides impending retirements of some Federal Secretaries and other top notches in bureaucracy, the government is most likely to reshuffle central bureaucracy sending ripples to the provinces as well. Sources in the Establishment Division revealed to TheNation on Tuesday that the Prime Minister Secretariat had already asked it to refresh seniority lists of various services and cadres of the federal civil services. According to the sources, apart from the lobbying with their political influences for desired slots, a number of senior bureaucrats are seen frequently visiting the Establishment Division these days. The sources said to TheNation that at least four Federal Secretaries would be retiring from service either this month or next month besides completion of a few post retirement contracts. However, the sources requested not to mention the names of the superannuating officers as a matter of courtesy since most of them would also be striving to get extension. The sources also underlined a number of vacancies requiring posting of full-fledged Federal Secretaries or equivalent Grade 22 officers that were so far kept pending in waiting for the cabinet expansion. Apart from the bureaucrats, the newly appointed Ministers have also been reportedly seeking advice from their confidant officers posted in the Establishment Division about choosing the persons of their choice in their respective Ministries, the sources said. Meanwhile the sources informed TheNation that the civil servants in the Foreign Office were perturbed over massive appointments of politically picked persons as Pakistan's Ambassadors at large abroad and even based here. According to the sources, the total number of the Ambassadors at large appointment by the PPP government has swell crossed a double figure and perhaps the highest ever figure of such appointments in the history of Foreign Office. The sources added that the PPP spree of making political appointments in the Foreign Office was not over yet. However, the sources admitted that some of them were working with the Foreign Office on an honorary basis not costing anything to the Government of Pakistan.
