Anti-mafia social activist gunned down

KARACHI - Convener of Gutter Baghicha Bachao Tehreek and Chairman Karachi NGOs Alliance Nisar Baloch was killed and two passers-by were wounded when gunmen targeted him at Love Lines Bridge within the precincts of Soldier Bazaar Police Station on Saturday. According to police, 40-year-old Nisar was killed while he was on his way from Old Golimar to Saddar. As the assailants sprayed bullets on the victim, he tried to escape but fell off his motorbike at Garden Road after receiving multiple wounds. Nisar was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital but he succumbed to injuries before receiving medical treatment. The two passers-by, Yousuf (40) and Tariq (31), also sustained bullet injuries and were shifted to the hospital where their condition is stated to be out of danger. Nisar Baloch, a social activist, was leading a campaign against the land mafia in Old Golimar area. He was a furious opponent of illegal encroachments at Gutter Baghicha. It is important to recall that Nisar had addressed a news conference at Karachi Press Club against the land grabbers the other day and accused an ethnic political party of backing the illegal encroachers Nisars brother Noor-uddin has said that Nisars news conference was the FIR against the killers during which he had mentioned their names. An FIR (No 331/09) under section 302 and 324 has been registered against the unidentified suspects. Meanwhile, major parts of Old Golimar and Pak Colony were shutdown in protest against the murder of Nisar Baloch. Soon after the killing, a large number of people took out a rally and staged a sit-in against the brutal act. All the business activities remained suspended while the roads leading towards Bada Board from Old Golimar were also blocked. To counter any violence, Pak Colony police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Prominent social activist, Nisar Baloch, a schoolteacher by profession, was associated with several non-governmental organisations (NGOs). He started his social career by establishing a street school Aap Ka Madrassa (Your School) in 1976 to provide free education to the children and adults who could not bear the expenses. Later, in 1986 he established Baloch Promotive Computer and English Language Centre at Old Golimar for the youths of area, from where thousands of people obtained degrees in IT related sectors so far. He was also active in promoting sports activities in the locality. In many ways, Nisar played his role to serve the old settlers of the metropolitan city. Currently, Nisar was campaigning against the land mafia, which is using different tactics to grab the precious state land of Trans-Lyari Park (Gutter Baghicha) located in Site Town from the platform of Gutter Baghicha Bachao Tehreek, Shehri and Karachi NGOs Alliance for the last many years. One of his companions Nasir Kareem Baloch has strongly condemned the gruesome killing and expressed his dissatisfaction over the law enforcers and the government, saying the incident proved that the influence of land mafia was expanding with each passing day. He said Nisar had launched the struggle for the peoples rights and he was not involved in politics, adding that the killing of a great volunteer had created discontent among the people.
