Explosions rock City

LAHORE-At least seven people including two minor children were injured, two of them critically, in three consecutive bomb blasts in Garhi Shahu, one of the crowded and busy areas of the City late on Tuesday night. First explosion took place in the basement of Chinno Juice Corner situated alongside the road while the others occurred minutes after first blast in two other shops including again another juice corner and a beauty parlour. It is pertinent to mention here that the site where incident took place was ideal place for the couples and the families as it was well decorated with especially juice corners, PCOs and beauty parlours. Local people were concerned over alleged misuse of the shops for immoral activities. Police, rescuers and the Bomb Disposal Squad officials were busy in the rescue operation when the second blast took place at GM Beauty Parlour nearly 50 yards away from the first blast site. As soon as the police, Rescue 1122 and bomb disposal squad officials rushed to the new site of blast, they witnessed another third bomb blast in Basco juice corner some yards away. A vehicle of the Bomb Disposal Squad officials was also partially damaged. All these three blasts took place within 15 minutes. A Bomb Disposal Squad official said that according to the preliminary investigation time devices were planted in the shops. The targeted shops were situated alongside the main road of Garhi Shahu that leads to Garhi Shahu Bridge and a famous girls college. The site, where serial blasts occurred, was most populated area of the City with a large number of juice corners, grocery shops, PCOs and hotels. Especially, the juice corners were favourite for the families, couples and also school and college girls where normally extraordinary rush was witnessed. The whole area remained tense for more than three hours. Massive traffic mess was also witnessed. A senior police officer who wished not to be named claimed that the three-targeted shops were among the famous 'dating points' where usually young couples used to visit for 'dates'. He also claimed that parents, and brothers of the girls have hurled threats to the shop owners when they came to know about what they called immoral activities. It has been reliably learnt that the Qilla Gujjar Singh police had also conducted raids several times, took the owners of some shops to the police station and released them after taking written assurance from them that they would not allow their shops for immoral activities. Some locals said that many shops situated in the area are famous for immoral activities and exchange of hot words and scuffles were order of the day. Quoting the local shopkeepers, Rescue 1122 official said that luckily there was no extraordinary rush in the juice corners when the bombs went off. Panic and fear gripped the police officials, Rescue 1122 and other officials of the law enforcement agencies besides other people of the area, as they were not expecting series of blasts in such a close distance in the same area. Heavy contingent of the police sealed off the entire locality. After the blasts, thick smoke was seen billowing from the site causing terror among the people. The blast also broke the glasses of nearby buildings. Out of three shops where the bombs were planted, two of them were completely damaged. The police officers and the DCO Lahore agreed to the point that the blasts were carried out only to create panic and fear in the area, which was evident from the fact that soon after the three consecutive blasts, whole Garhi Shahu area also including some nearby localities were presenting a deserted look. Talking to the mediamen at blast site, the DCO said that medium level explosive material was used in the three blasts. While the DSP said that the incident of three consecutive blasts was a warning of the anti-social elements behind this incident who did not use high explosive material. Soon after the incident people restricted themselves to their homes while shops and all the nearby markets were immediately closed. Police showed a poor response when first call of a cylinder blast was made at a juice shop in the area. The police teams, Rescue 1122 officials followed by the Bomb Disposal Squad officials reached the spot and started relief activities. The Rescue 1122 officials shifted seven injured people, including two children, to the nearby hospitals. Mostly were shifted to the Services Hospital, Lahore. Three of them were identified as Abid, 12, Sher Muhammad, 13, and Shahzad, 22, while others are yet to be identified. Rescue 1122 officials said two sustained injuries in the first blast while others were injured in the second blast. An eyewitness Muhammad Rafique who was running a grocery shop said that though intensity of the blasts was not high but the blasts, however, created a lot of panic among the people. A customer Ashiq Mahmood said that he was helping the rescuers when the first blast occurred and as soon as the second blast took place, he thought it is better to escape from the scene. A local resident Majid Ali said that he himself witnessed all the three blasts when he was standing at the rooftop of his house situated alongside the same road of Garhi Shahu. He said after first blast, the situation was not so tense but as soon as two other blasts occurred, he saw people fleeing from the area.
