Travel chaos as PIA staff refuse to budge

The talks between the government and protesting PIA unions representatives remained inconclusive, reported a private TV channel on Wednesday. Following the failure of talks, the Joint Action Committee has announced a complete shutdown and demanded resignation of PIA MD Ejaz Haroon. No employee will perform any duty until the PIA MD is not removed, the Joint Action Committee said. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) crew went on strike Monday morning, demanding the airline management scrap pact with Turkish Airlines, sack its MD and reinstate the sacked employees. The first attempt to negotiate a solution ended after two hours at the Islamabad airport. The talks have failed, there is a complete deadlock, union committee leader Suhail Baluch told reporters. The strike will continue until the government agreed to meet our demands. Khurshid Shah, the head of governments negotiating team, said the talks had been adjourned but did not give any timeframe for their resumption. He denied deal with Turkish Airlines under which unions say PIA would surrender lucrative routes to Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and US destinations New York and Chicago. I have told them there is no such agreement, Shah said. In Karachi, the Airport Security Force baton charged protesting PIA employees. The strike observed by the staff forced PIA to ground and delay many flights, affecting thousands of passengers and leaving them in lurch. The standoff took place at evening when score of PIA workers gathered at Quaid-e-Azam International Airport, chanting slogans against management. The management, unexpectedly, called its police force which baton charged the protesting workers, injuring many of them. Journalist, cameramen and passengers were also subjected to the torture. The injured, including a cameraman, were shifted to hospital as they sustained injuries while covering the protest. Minister for Defence Ch Ahmad Mukhtar has ordered enquiry into the incident of baton charge on the workers. PIA employees in airports across the country including those in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar have refused to go on their jobs while those willing to join office were also forced to stay out. Our staff reporters add: The strike by the PIA employees continued causing massive interruption in the flights schedule. The PIA Employees Joint Action Committee is demanding the removal of PIA MD Captain (r) Ijaz Haroon and cancellation of the PIA-Turkish Airlines agreement immediately besides a judicial investigation into the torture of elderly female PIA employees. Sources in the airline claimed the government had accepted two demands out of three including 'cancellation of PIA Turkish agreement and restoration of sacked employees and pilots of the PIA as well. A flight inquiry official said that flight operation from Allama Iqbal International Airport remained almost paralysed and only few flights could land and take off. He said flights from Lahore-Islamabad, Lahore-Multan, Lahore-Bahawalpur and Lahore-Delhi remained suspended and only one or two local and international flights could operate. Meanwhile, the committee also appealed to the prime minister to give special attention for stopping the intervention of political parties in the airline affairs. The committee has also demanded the immediate restoration of the employees sacked by the MD PIA and cancellation of show-cause notices served by the defence ministry on more than eight employees including PALPA President Captain Sohail Baloch and General Secretary TM Rabbani. The protest began late on Monday night when six pilots - Captain Anwar Zaidi, Captain Tariq Chaudhry, Captain Siddique Rehman, Captain Aatifullah, First Officer Zainul Abideen, and First Officer Waqas Ahmed - were sacked for provoking employees against the PIA management under the Essential Services Act (ESA) and some of them were served show-cause notices. The protesters complained of manhandling of the aged and women PIA employees by the workers of a political party when they were staging a peaceful protest. Earlier, Prime Minister Gilani constituted a three-member committee comprising Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, Federal Minister for Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah and Information Minister Qamaruz Zaman Kaira which will look into the issue. The committee clarified the protests were launched just to condemn the poor policies of the PIA. PIA MD Aijaz Haroon failed to safeguard the interest of PIA and its employees alike, it added. The body said the PIA presented a business plan on November 27, 2010, that was aimed at expanding the PIA operations and its routes across the globe to bring a good profit to the airline but just after a month, on December 29, 2010, the PIA management released an announcement regarding an agreement with Turkish Airlines, shrinking the national network by stopping PIAs operation to New York, Chicago, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan and Barcelona. In the twin cites Rawalpindi and Islamabad, scores of workers of Pakistan International Airline (PIA) kept on protesting. From Islamabad over 27 flights could not leave the airport for their destinations, said sources, adding that a critical situation was witnessed when PIA MD Aijaz Haroon, who arrived Islamabad through an emergency flight PK-300 from Karachi to attend a meeting of Standing Committee, has been barred from coming out of the aircraft. The MD had to spend a lot of his time while sitting in the aircraft standing on runway as the PIA staff refused to provide him ladder. However, the PIA management later provided him a ladder brought from the Chaklala Airbase. But here the problems for MD did not end, as once again the management asked him not go out through VIP lounges because protesters might harm him. Later, he was escorted to Islamabad in a car, given by Pakistan Air Force. A scuffle erupted when PIA Chief Security Manager (CSM) Raja Zaheer tried to go inside the airport, but angry protesters misbehaved in bid to bar him. Similarly, a clash also occurred between Station Manager Asad Hammed Baig and PIA workers and they allegedly beaten Baig.
