Taliban retreat from Buner after talks

PESHAWAR - After successful negotiations with traditional jirga, Taliban militants Friday returned from Buner district to adjacent Swat. The meeting between traditional jirga of Buner elders and Taliban militants was held at Saidu Sharif, Swat, on late Thursday night. Besides others, Commissioner Malakand Syed Mohammad Javed and known religious figure Maulana Waliullah Kabalgrami played an active role in the mediation process. Tehrik Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Deputy Chief and known figure from Bajaur Agency Maulana Faqir Mohammad also joined the reconciliatory efforts at the last moment. He along with his active supporters intervened into the matter on the directions of Maulana Sufi Mohammad, Chief of banned Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariah Muhammadi (TNSM). According to details, the reconciliatory efforts were initiated by Maulana Waliullah Kabalgrami after Tuesday violence, in which three policemen and two volunteers of traditional lashkar were killed. The NWFP Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain had said that eight militants were killed, but during the negotiation process, Taliban confirmed the deaths of their 22 accomplices and injuries to 13 others. The first round of reconciliatory talks was held between Buner jirga and TNSM at Barikot, Swat, and the second at Saidu Sharif. A delegation of Taliban militants headed by their Spokesman Muslim Khan and Malik Mahmood attended the jirga that continued for around three hours. In the light of reconciliation, Taliban vacated the area and left for Swat. However, there are reports that certain Taliban militants are still present in different parts of Gokand valley and its surrounding areas, but the officials believe that these militants will abide by the agreement pertaining to their pullout from the area. Before leaving the area, Taliban delivered provocative sermons in most of the mosques of the area in Friday prayers. They justified their entrance into Buner on the grounds that they were struggling for the imposition of Islamic Sharia in the whole area. They condemned all those Buner elders who opposed their entrance and constituted traditional lashkar against them, besides warning them of dire consequences.
