ISI Chief embarks on US visit today

ISLAMABAD - Preparations are under way in the Foreign Office for crucial visit of Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir to Washington beginning from April 20 in response to a US invitation to mend strained relations with Islamabad. Bilateral relations between the USA and Pakistan have been in tatters following a drone hit on a peace congregation in North Waziristan Agency on March 17 as well as the Raymond Davis episode. Official sources told The Nation on Sunday that both Washington and Islamabad would struggle to narrow down their differences in order to resume bilateral Strategic Dialogue as well as trilateral meetings on Afghanistan. It is yet to be decided whether Salman Bashir would go alone or would lead a delegation, Foreign Office Spokesperson Janjua said in response to a query seeking to determine whether or not Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha would accompany the Foreign Secretary. She said it was not in her knowledge that DG ISI was also visiting the United States, saying there was still enough time to decide important issues relating to the visit of the Foreign Secretary. Though media has been speculating that Director General ISI would visit United States from April 11, neither the ISPR nor the US Embassy had knowledge of such visit. You better ask this question from ISPR, US Embassys designated spokesperson said in response to a query from this scribe. An ISPR official, when contacted, requested to approach the Foreign Office in this connection. Relations between the CIA and ISI have hit their lowest ebb following the Raymond Davis episode that triggered tension leading to a serious trust deficit between the two organisations. Consequently, Pakistan had to evolve a new visa policy for foreign visitors to ensure that no harm was done to the countrys national security. Online adds: Inter-Services Intelligence(ISI) Director General Lt-Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha will embark on US visit today (Monday) to iron out differences with the CIA. Sources told Online that the purpose of Pashas visit is to remove misunderstandings between the ISI and the CIA, which surfaced over the issue of Raymond Davis. The sources said that General Pasha would also raise the issue of drone attacks on tribal areas of Pakistan. Pasha had been invited by CIA chief Leonne Panetta. The two personalities are in constant contact for restoration of confidence between their two agencies, the sources added.
