PPP sets loyalty as main criterion for Senate ticket

LAHORE - Pakistan People's Party has set loyalty with the party as main criterion to award Senate tickets to its party men, as it has sought applications from prospective candidates for upcoming Senate elections due in March this year. The PPP sources told The Nation on Saturday that loyalty of a candidate with party would be given precedence over other criteria set for award of Senate ticket. The prospective candidate will have to prove that he /she has not violated party discipline in the last 12 years. A ticket allocation board headed by PPP Co-chairman, Asif Ali Zardari will finalise the names of party candidates after announcement of election schedule. As 50 Senators are going to retire in March this year, eleven seats will be filled from each province, while two seats have been allocated to federal capital and four to FATA. Two seats each for technocrats and women have been reserved in each province. The PPP is likely to win four general seats from Punjab on the basis of its strength in Punjab Assembly, while it can have another one in a possible collaboration with PML-Q. Party secretary general Jehangir Badr, Advisor to PM on Finance, Shaukat Tarin, Rehman Malik, Khalid Kharral, Ch Munawar Anjum, Nargas Munawar, Rana Aftab, Nasira Arshad Mayo, Khawaja Akbar, Dr Israr Shah, Ch Manzoor, Zafar Kamran and former Chief Secretary Javed Qureshi are among the prospective candidates for Senate polls from Punjab. Among these, Akbar Khawaja has already enjoyed one term as Senator, while Munawar Anjum was also given ticket once by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed. The last date for filing applications along with a pay order amounting to Rs 30,000 is January 25.
