ISLAMABAD- Supporting Afghan-led reconciliation process, Islamabad Friday assured Kubul that it would leave no stones unturned in making the Afghan driven peace process a fruitful one. This transpired after marathon meetings between the visiting Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his Pakistani counterpart President Asif Ali Zardari here at the Presidency. According to diplomatic sources both Kabul and Islamabad have gained significant grounds during the meetings, and would unveil major policy steps in making the Afghan driven peace and reconciliation process sincerely a meaningful exercise. It is Pakistans war, we are fighting our own war. These are the people who are killing our children, killing our brothers and sisters, Zardari said in a joint press conference with Karzai, referring to Pakistans own battle against extremists. We support the people and the government of Afghanistan. We support them. We cannot expect peace in the region without peace in Afghanistan, he added. Zardari said that Pak-Afghan partnership is a key to peace and development of the two countries and was important for increased connectivity within the region as well as with the outside world. The president said that Pakistan and Afghanistan were bestowed with great human and natural resources and all that is needed was a joint effort to convert the challenges into opportunities. Zardariexpressed the hope that the visit would prove to be a great opportunity for frank and close discussions for promoting mutual engagement and cooperation. The president said that Pakistan and Afghanistan were two brotherly neighbours and their relations were rooted in common history, culture and religion. He said that Pakistan wants a strong, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan and was keen to promote peace, stability and development in the region and beyond. The president said that Pakistan was also very keen to strengthen bilateral relations through increased cooperation in diverse areas. The President said that terrorism has seriously affected the social and political fabric of the two societies and has drained the economies. There will be no peace in Pakistan if there is war in Afghanistan and vise versa, adding, it is inter-dependent and together we can bring peace and stability to the region, the president said. Karzai said the relationship between the neighbouring countries has improved. Twins as we are, the suffering is the same and the joy (of peace) will be the same. The struggle (to fight terror) is the struggle of all and the victory will be in the interests of all, he added. Now we are moving forward with concrete steps, he said while pointing to various joint projects of the two countries for improvement in fields of infrastructure, education, health and commercial activities.
