VEHARI - At least 28 people including 20 students were killed and 45 others injured when a passenger bus collided head-on with a trailer near Lodhran on Friday. A passenger bus was heading to Sadiqabad from Faisalabad. When reached near Lodhran, due to over speeding and overloading it ploughed into a trailer, killing 28 people. The crash was so severe that the bus was totally wrecked. Those who died included: Dr Jehanzeb, Munir Ahmad, Imran, Allah Wasaya, Liaqat, Muhammad Ali, Mujahid, Tahir, Sanaullah, Zafar, Ali, Rukhsana, Zahida, Aasia, Nasim Bibi and others. The injured were immediately shifted to Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur and DHQ Hospital Lodhran. The destroyed bus had total capacity of 44 persons but it was carrying at least 100 persons in it and students were sitting on its roof. DPO Lodhran Khurram Ali Shah said investigations are underway to know the real cause of incident and those responsible for the mishap would be dealt with sternly. He confirmed 25 deaths and said the process of identification of bodies is underway. President Asif Zardari, PM Yousuf Raza Gilani have expressed their shock and grief over the loss of precious lives in the incident. Agencies add: "It was the bus driver's negligence which caused the accident that killed several people and injured 45 others. Many of the dead were women and children," Khurram Ali Shah said. Pakistan has the world's third-highest death rate from traffic accidents, blamed on poor roads and reckless driving.
