Militants kill 3 cops, get commander freed in Peshawar

PESHAWAR - At least three policemen were killed when Taliban militants attacked and got their commander Nadeem Abassi released from police captivity on University Road near Peshawar Dental College on Friday. The sources said that police personnel were carrying Taliban commander Nadeem Abassi to Central Jail Peshawar from Khyber College of Dentistry when armed militants attacked them and resorted to firing with sophisticated weapons. Two police personnel were killed on the spot while another succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital. The deceased were identified as Tariq, resident of Pakha Ghulam, Raees, resident of Gul Bela, and Hussain Jaffar, resident of Kohat. The news spread like jungle fire in Peshawar where entire police administration was put on high alert to trace the escaped Taliban militants. 'The prisoner was arrested under terrorism charges. The gunmen came on two motorcycles and a car, and escaped after killing three policemen and injuring another and freeing their colleague, said SSP Operations Muhammad Ijaz Khan. He said that around eight to 10 gunmen were deployed outside the dental college. Briefing the media persons, Chief Capital City Police Imtiaz Altaf said that security had been put on red alert across Peshawar while investigation was under way to identify the involved persons. He said that Taliban commander was being taken to jail from Khyber College of Dentistry after provision of dental heath service when armed persons attacked police, he said. It is worth mentioning here that University Campus of Peshawar is near Tribal Areas where militants could easily take refuge and probably Nadeem Abassi has been taken to Khyber Agency. A day earlier, a police convoy was targeted by a female suicide bomber and a remote-controlled device, which resulted into killing of five policemen.
