German of Pak origin jailed

BERLIN (AFP)- A court jailed for eight years a German citizen of Pakistani origin Monday for helping to fund and supply Al-Qaeda in Pakistans northwest frontier region. The 47-year-old, identified only as Aleem N, was arrested in February last year and charged with giving 27,000 Euros as well as materials including night-vision equipment to the group. The court in Koblenz found him guilty of belonging to a foreign terrorist organisation, receiving explosives training at an extremist camp and of helping recruit volunteers to go to Pakistan. Germany, which opposed the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, has around 3,700 troops in Afghanistan under Nato command. It has also beefed up security in response to the threat of attacks by Islamic extremists.
