No suicide jacket used in blast

LAHORE - The suicide bomber, who blew himself up at Moon Market on Wednesday night killing nine people including two police officials, applied a different technique by using iron nails (nut bolts) in the explosive material he was carrying, The Nation has learnt Thursday. Police investigators believe no suicide bomber adopted this methodology in the four suicide attacks earlier carried out in different parts of the provincial capital. They suspect that this time a new organisation of the terrorists may be involved in the suicide blast at Moon Market. It has also been learnt reliably that no evidences of use of suicide jacket were found in the Iqbal Town blast. The pattern used in the incident had been adopted in the suicide attacks in Southern Punjab in the past. When contacted, SP Investigation Iqbal Town, Shoaib Khurram confirmed the reports, saying that the attacker had not used suicide jacket in the Iqbal Town blast. During examination of the exploded material, it was disclosed that ball barring were not used in the explosive material that are usually planted in suicide jackets, he said. The SP said that evidences of iron nails (nut bolts), collected from the crime scene in a huge quantity, have confirmed that the terrorists adopted a different pattern in the incident that was used in some suicide incidents in South Punjab. He further said that the explosive material used in the suicide attack in Iqbal Town was locally made. This new pattern adopted in the Moon Market blast was not much destructive than the other like the suicide jacket as ball barring were used in the later technique for greater causalities. To a query, he said that efforts are being made for the identity of the organisation behind the blast and for this purpose investigations have been extended across the province. When asked about the domicile of the suicide bomber, the Superintendent Police said that from his body appearance the terrorist seemed to be from tribal areas of NWFP. Another police officer, DSP Iqbal Town Circle Shahzada Saleem told The Nation that the suicide bomber's body parts including his head, two hands and a leg, which were found in identifiable condition, have been sent for DNA test in the Punjab University's concerned department and result was expected within a week, He said that law enforcement agencies had decided to approach NADRA for the identity of the suicide bomber through his fingerprints. To a query, he said that chances of the suicide bomber's identity were very bleak as those people are usually selected for suicide attack, who had no record in the NADRA. However, it would be premature to say anything about the identity of the suicide attacker, he said, adding that situation would be cleared after consulting the NADRA. A police source said that a joint investigation team of around four law enforcement agencies has been constituted to trace out the defunct organization behind the Iqbal Town blast carried out on the eve of Independence Day and for the identity of the suicide attacker. The source said that the officials of Iqbal Town police, CIA, Anti-Terrorist Cell, and CID besides few others will be the part of the joint investigation team. The team has been given tasks in a high-level meeting held on Thursday with special directions to keep their assignments of tracing the culprits on top priority. DIG police Investigation Mushtaq Sukhera will supervise the team of different law enforcement agencies. It has also been learnt that the police high-ups had contacted the CID department for providing them all the necessary information about the whereabouts of all the defunct organisations either operating in the Punjab or other parts of the country. On receiving information, raids would be carried out for the arrests of the organisations' members across the country to unearth the militants behind the Iqbal Town suicide incident. When contacted, Additional IG Crime Investigation Department (CID) Malik Muhammad Iqbal said that the department officials would only assist the city police, which was playing a major role in the investigations of Iqbal Town suicide attack. He said that the CID would also provide them all necessary information if it was approached by the city police high-ups. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) would also be consulted regarding the recent suicide incident, which was thought to be having connections with the four other suicide attacks carried out in the past in the provincial capital, the police source said. When asked about the explosive material used in the Moon Market suicide incident, the DSP Iqbal Town also confirmed it as a locally made explosive material, saying that some used parts of the bomb have been handed over to the officials of Civil Defence for further confirmation. To another query, the DSP Iqbal Town said that short beard assailant was around 25-year-old. Many photographs of his face in different angles had been taken for his identification from various government departments and organisations. During examination of the body, the police investigators have reached to the conclusion that suicide attacker was looking a Pathan, he said.
